A learner-student relationship in the classroom is a positive relationship between the teacher and the student/pupil in effort to gain trust and respect from each other. This relationship may consist of the act of being polite and getting to know your students/pupils better, encouraging them to become stronger learners, respect, honour and value their individuality.
The relationship between learners and teachers play a large role in the trajectory of a child’s academic success and social development. Establishing a positive relationship with their teacher helps a learner feel more comfortable and safe in their classroom environment as a result, learners are more likely to participate actively in class and challenge themselves academically.
The learner/teacher relationship is a cornerstone in a learner’s social maturation process. Cultivating a positive rapport with a non-parental authority figure allows learners to define themselves adapt to their environment, grow their emotional and social intelligence as well as having better grades in school. It takes guts and determination to address a teacher privately and let the teacher know how much doing well in school matters to them, teachers tend to value that outreach and display of maturity.
According to Riddle,37years education expert and founder of ELTC, positive relationship with teacher become the game changer. Kids emotional intelligence increase when they are challenged to perform and function at their very best in the midst of a safe structural environment.
Positive learner/teacher relationship also develop learner’s self-worth, confidence and improve their mental health (Buffet 2019) as well as ensuring that they know that their ideas are valuable. It also decreases behaviour problems and promote academic success.
Changing your child’s attitude and beliefs about their relationship with their teachers is one of the important things you can do to improve your child’s education.
